Ahrefs says KD 11, 15k volume. SERPS page 1 is all 90+ DR

Hey all.

As per the title. Anyone know why this happens sometimes? The keyword is Kaolin.

This is my first post, so a quick intro.

I'm a writer and content marketer with some 10 years' experience. Super interested in SEO and looking to deepen my knowledge there.

Looking forward to learning and contributing here when I can.

Mark

Hello & welcome!

These keyword difficulty metrics are nonsense - just like most metrics in SEO from tools.

KW difficulty is normally calculated by the volume of pages ranking for said keyword. But that means absolutely nothing in some cases.

The actual KW difficulty requires your eyes. Kaolin is under the drug niche, this industry has got huge competition, not by volume, but by quality resources. Google will never, ever, rank anybody "easily" for such a term. Your domain will 100% need an awful lot of creditably.

The bottom result is NICE. NICE is literally the guidelines in the UK with anything health - and even they are 10th! So yeah, it doesn't matter that there's a small amount of volume for a term, in this instance, the niche is fiercely competitive. This isn't something a formula can figure out though, it's something which you need to acknowledge through your own brain opposed to a tool.

OK, I am going to slightly disagree with Matt on this one.

We tend to use KD as to how easy it going to be to rank any given keyword, whereas in a lot of cases that would be true it is not always. The ability to get your advert to show with PPC is really what the matric is about.

In most cases the 2 go hand in hand, so for a competitive keyword you would expect a ton of adverts outbidding each over to get shown but in this case, there are none, making it very easy to dominate the top slot by bidding a low amount.

PPC and lining google pockets further is not a game I tend to play so my knowledge of what google allow regarding medical terms is a bit weak.  It could be that it's not a term google allow being bid on, maybe some of the PPC experts here could jump in and bring us up to date medical T&C's.

One other aspect of your site is the fact kaolin is considered a "drug" by Google.  The sites you listed are all the power hitters... have lots of links, and reputable sources for qualifying as experts in the field, your site on the other hand is new from what I have observed, probably lacks the "in Bound Links" those sites have.

Then you have the single word you're targeting.  In my opinion way too generic, "kaolin".  Most folks, 60% or more use mobile voice search.  I recommend you change your thought processes to account for these factors.

Not knowing your site, how it is presented and your target goals... let me suggest

Target  KWs 3 to 5 words length... for example

kaolin skin care

Where does kaolin come from

Is kaolin safe to use

Is kaolin safe for skin

Secondly start posting your site to sites that will provide you a backlink, don't worry if they are "no follow".  These are the safest links you can build.  Place these links on sites where people that are interested in Kaolin visit.  Take advantage of some directories as there are business directories people still use.  It's free advertising too.

Just to be clear about this last piece of advice, I am talking about link building and the use of "no follow links".

I am not recommending you go out and buy links or create a bunch of "Do Follow".  This will just trash your site.  You build links for traffic not ranking.  Traffic is where the money is !!!!

Hi Chedders. Well, a keyword difficulty (KD) of 11 is very low. The search volume is very high at around 15k per month. With such a low competition keyword, I'd expect to see some smaller sites having optimized for it and ranking on page 1 of the SERPs. The keyword doesn't have buying intent. But with such high search volume and such a low competition score, maybe it would be worth a shot to rank for and try to convert some of that traffic. But every result on page 1 is among the heaviest hitters on the web, suggesting that the keyword difficulty is actually very high and not low like the Ahrefs KD score suggests. Hence the question: Anyone know why this happens sometimes? "This" meaning a very low KD score, tons of traffic, but only 90 domain rank websites on page 1. Perhaps it's an issue with how Ahrefs scores its KD. But I figured I'd ask some experts to be sure.
