Despite the claims these automated links will damage your site, My advice would be to avoid them at all costs. 

This would also include buying bulk links from places like eBay / fiverr etc. Any unnatural links like this are red flags to google.

There are more ways to get your site penalized than there are to get it to rank well.

Do not make links for the sake of links.

Recently Dejan SEO, a highly respected site and person heading it got their domain penalized by a manual action due to some old link building tactics - which were better than forum posting for links, that bit them.

It was also super cool of them to share their journey and the results. They got their penalty lifted.

Building bad back links can cause your business serious harm - do not hire any SEO person or company that engages in these tactics and certainly don't pay for an automated tool to do it for you.

It is indeed a good way to get a backlink but, unnecessary link placement without any relevancy may work otherwise, leading to banning of account or getting link removed.
