A sitemap is primarily in XML format. It's basically just a list of all your URLs, or whichever URLs you decide to choose, for Google to crawl. Sitemaps come in handy for new websites, & orphaned pages. If your internal linking is good, they really aren't essential, but as I say for new websites & orphaned pages they work a treat.

I just want to add for multi-language sites you can use site maps to provide all the href lang tags. This will eliminate a lot of code bloat if you support more than just 2 or 3 languages.

Sitemap is an XML file that is full of your individual web page's URLs. It's like an archive of every web page in your website. This file should be easily discoverable in your site in order for search engine crawlers to stumble upon it.

A sitemap is a file placed on the website with the list of individual pages so that the user can easily view any specific page.
Sometimes user gets lost on the website and views unnecessary pages. For a good user experience sitemaps are used to allow the user access to the relevant information.

  • Normal XML Sitemap: This by far the most common type of sitemap. It’s usually in the form of an XML Sitemap that links to different pages on your website.
  • Video Sitemap: Used specifically to help Google understand video content on your page.
  • News Sitemap: Helps Google find content on sites that are approved for Google News.
  • Image Sitemap: Helps Google find all of the images hosted on your site.

With the help of this, we could make the crawlers to crawl all the pages of our website.

sometimes it can help to hide certain pages from users so that it can be made uncrawlable.

We can provide Valid priority values have range interval [0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0].

Providing priority helps the crawler to understand the importance of each page for the spider

Priority is not used by Google or any other search engine that I know of. Yes, it was in the original specification but is now ignored most major search engines.
